Mulch Information & Tips
How to Apply Mulch
- Install plants.
- Apply a 2-4" thick layer once settled (Thinner for annuals/perennials).
- Reapply mulch as needed.
What to Avoid
- Too Thick- Mulch 6" or deeper (after settling) in plant beds may encourage root rot due to excessive moisture and poor aeration.
- Too Close to House- Mulch closer than 12” to the house may harbor termites and other insects. We recommend a stone barer around the base of your home.
- Mulching Poorly Drained Soils- Mulch tends to hold water and can increase your problem in this situation.
- Too close to Trees- Don't pile a heavy layer of mulch against the trunk.
Helpful Hints:
- 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
- (Length x Width = Sq. Ft.)
- To get cubic yards needed: take square footage x depth desired (inches) divided by 324
- To get coverage from cubic yards: take cubic yards x 324 divided by depth (inches) = # of Sq. Ft. mulch will cover.
- 1 yd. of mulch = Approximately (9) 3 Cubic Foot bags
- 1 yd. of mulch = Approximately (13.5) 2 Cubic Foot bags
- 1 yd. of mulch will cover approximately 100 sq. ft. at 3" deep
- A heaping load on a full-size pickup is approx. 3 cu. yds.
Recommended Depths
- Garden Beds - 2-4 inches
- Playgrounds - 6 inches
